Our strong Viking.

Right now, you are lying on the other side of a wall in a hospital in China. So close to us – and yet impossibly far away.

The doctors have had to remove part of your skull to give your swollen brain the space it needs. You have suffered bleeding and severe injuries, and no one yet knows when you will wake up or what your life will look like afterwards.

We only get to see you for a few brief moments when you are taken for CT scans. Here in China, we are not allowed to be with you in the intensive care unit. We cannot hold your hand or talk to you. We cannot tell you that we are right here. That you are not alone. That you have to keep fighting.

And if there is one thing you have done your entire life, Daniel, it is fight.

As a child, you fought to find your way in a world that did not always understand you. In primary school, you were told that you would never be able to pass your exams.

But they didn’t know you.

You kept fighting. You passed your exams, earned a bachelor’s degree from DTU, and travelled to China to pursue your master’s degree in neuroscience – the study of the brain.

And now you are lying here with severe injuries to the very brain you have spent so much of your life learning about.

We will do everything we possibly can to bring you home. Home, where we can be by your side. Home to Denmark, where you won’t have to wake up surrounded by people you cannot understand.
